Shirley Anne Morrow, 84, from Joy, Illinois passed away gracefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 after suffering a stroke. The beloved wife of William G. Morrow, Shirley was the loving mother of Scott, supportive mother-in-law of Patricia Patton Morrow, and devoted grandmother of Michaela, Anna and Nicholas, all of Boston, Mass.
Born in North Henderson Township, IL on May 7, 1929, Shirley was the daughter of Annie Willet Kenney and Frank Kenney, and the youngest of three sisters including Jeanne Kenney Stone and Doris Kenney Higgins of Aledo. She enjoyed being an aunt to her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Edys Morrow McIntosh of Placentia, CA.
Mrs. Morrow graduated from Joy High School and Western Illinois University. After a brief time teaching in Germany when William served in the Army after their marriage in 1951, she taught and served as librarian for thirty years in the Joy and Westmer school system. She was an active member of the Joy United Methodist Church and supporter of the Mercer County library and Historical Society. An avid reader, talented artist and loving homemaker, Shirley kept the cookie jar full and her door open to neighbors. After the death of her husband in 2008, she lived with her son and his family in Boston during winter months and was an active participant in their church and school activities. She proudly told everyone she met that she was from Joy, Illinois.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3 at 11 a.m. at the Joy United Methodist Church and officiated by Rev. Beth E. Nelson. Greeting the family will begin at 10 a.m. A light luncheon will follow in the church basement for friends and family. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the church.
