Shirley I. McCormick, age 85, of Peoria, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2017, in her home with her four daughters by her side.
Shirley Irene was born on August 11, 1931, to Harvey and Irene Peck Nott in Berwick, Illinois. She graduated from Maquon High School in 1949 as valedictorian of her class. On April 4, 1951, she married Charles L. McCormick in Knoxville, Illinois. Shirley became a true farm wife, as she and Charles farmed many years in the Maquon and Rio areas. She worked at the Woodhull Plaza as a cook and cashier. She also worked for the R.O.W.V.A. School District as head cook, in Rio, IL, then as lunch room supervisor and secretary in the Superintendent’s office, retiring in 1990 and moving to Viola, IL. In her retirement, she enjoyed baking pies for the Milkhouse Diner in Viola. She was Past Worthy Matron of Rio Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Viola United Presbyterian Church. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved dancing, playing cards and bingo and traveling to Arizona with her husband for the winters. She also enjoyed bowling and quilting.
Shirley and her husband, Charles, had four daughters: Jackie Dempsey, Judy Timberlake, Becky Becker and Patty McQuigg, all of Peoria, IL; 11 grandchildren: Brent, Tina, Chad,
Sara Kay, Denise, Kelly, Stephanie, Christine, Billy, Nevada and Chance and 8 great grandchildren: Andrew, Taylor, Kyleigh, Jade, Grayson, Charlotte, Haven and Nora. Her siblings are: Dorothy Howell, Donald Nott, Harold Nott and Fred Nott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, as well as her parents, 2 brothers: Robert Nott and Charles Nott, 2 sons-in-law: Mike Dempsey and Bill McQuigg and 2 granddaughters: Tina Harris and Sara Kay Timberlake.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 2nd at United Presbyterian Church, Viola, Illinois. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, March 1st from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola.
