Shirley M. Maynard, 68, of Viola, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at her home. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Burial is at Hopewell Cemetery, rural New Windsor. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 14, at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be made to Viola United Presbyterian Church. She was born April 13, 1940, in Keithsburg, daughter of Purn and Effie Kenney Willits. She married Jack L. Maynard on Nov. 9, 1962, in Viola. He died April 21, 2005. Shirley had worked as a nurse's aid at Mercer County Hospital and several nursing homes in the area. She and Jack ran the Arena Restaurant in New Windsor for many years. She also had been a school bus driver for the Winola School District. Mrs. Maynard enjoyed quilting, camping, fishing and spending her winters in Texas. She was a member of Viola United Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Rodney Hawkins, Milan; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cheryl Maynard, Matherville; Mark and Cathy Maynard, Taylor Ridge and Wade and Cindy Maynard, Aledo; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ella Jump, Donna, Texas, and Mary Kay and O.K. Collins, Waterloo, Iowa; two brothers, Larry Willits, Waterloo, and Gary Willits, Joy; special friend and his family, Earl Davis, Malcolm, Iowa, and Dave and Kathy Dayton and Bryan and Donna Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Keith; and several brothers and sisters.
