Ruth Ann Sloan, 71, of New Boston, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo. Services are noon Thursday, May 7, with visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of services, at New Boston United Methodist Church. Burial is at New Boston Cemetery. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to New Boston United Methodist Church or New Boston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance. She was born July 16, 1937, in Moline, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Ruth McCauley Carlson. She married E. Reed Sloan on June 5, 1955, in Aledo. He preceded her in death in December 1986. Ruth was a farm wife and ran Ruthie's Market in New Boston for most of her married life. She also had worked several years for Mercer County Home Health Care. Her very close friends and family knew her by her special nickname, Tickles. She always was looking to give a helping hand to the down and out. Mrs. Sloan was a member of New Boston United Methodist Church and was active in its women's group. She enjoyed bowling and being a member of the New Boston Five Hundred Card Club. Survivors include one daughter (and spouse), Rita (Mark) Phillipson, Alexis; three sons, Brian Sloan, Muscatine, Iowa, Murry Sloan, New Boston, and Bret Sloan, Kewanee; 8 grandchildren, Travis Smith, Cody Smith, Kenda (Bobby) Woodsmall, Eli Sloan, Kara Sloan, Shenea Sloan Sedam, Shannon Boynton and Hannah Lorah; five great-grandchildren, Nerrissa Prater Sloan, Lydia Malcom and Jay, Jasmine and Josie Woodsmall; two sisters, Jean Mahaffey, Aledo, and Laurene "Pinky" Kuncar, Coral Gables, Fla.; one brother, Ernie Carlson, Covington, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Joan Sloan; and daughter, Kelly Sue Sloan.
