Raymond D. Dowsett, 80, of Aledo, Illinois died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Fox Point Manor, McHenry, Illinois.
Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Viola United Methodist Church with Rev. Cindy Rettig, officiating. Special music will be rendered by Ardis Hampton and Pauline Brown. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery with graveside military rites by the U.S. Navy and Mercer County V.F.W. Post 1571. Those serving as pallbearers are Justin Dowsett, Lee Dowsett, William Dowsett, Dean Dowsett, Dale Dowsett and Ken Brown. Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be left for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Raymond Dean Dowsett was born April 1, 1932 in Matherville, Illinois a son of Willard and Alma Maynard Dowsett. He earned his Bachelors of Science in General Engineering from the University of Illinois, with honors. He married Nancy Lawson on June 26, 1954 in Viola, Illinois, she preceded him in death on February 27, 2003. Raymond actively served in the United States Navy from 1955-1958. He joined the Navy Reserves and retired from there as a Lieutenant Commander. Serving on a battleship and troop carriers, he loved the Navy and seeing the world. Mr. Dowsett worked as an engineer for Honeywell, Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1988. Ray enjoyed golf, woodworking, landscaping and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved being outdoors and combined his passion for golf and landscaping to create a five hole golf course on his land.
Survivors include his sons, Dale (Beth) Dowsett, McHenry, IL and Dean (Cherie) Dowsett, Slinger, WI; 4 grandchildren, Rebecca, Justin, Lee and William and siblings, Jack Dowsett, Viola, IL and Bonnie Dowsett, Minneapolis, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and dear wife.
