Ramona Lawson

Ramona Lawson, 82, of Viola, Illinois, a teacher for 40 years, died Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Trinity Rock Island.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2013 at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola.  Burial will be in Viola Cemetery.  Visitation is Sunday, June 2nd from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola.  Memorials may be made to the Viola United Methodist Church or Viola Food Pantry.

Ramona and her twin brother, Richard, were born at home in Viola on January 18, 1931 to George William and Francis Dorothy Lawson.  After graduating from Viola High School, she attended Western Illinois University getting her degree in Business Education in 1953.  For the next 10 years she taught business at Winchester, Illinois.  Moving back to Viola, she was the business teacher at Rockridge High School.  She went back to Western Illinois University in the summers, receiving her Masters Degree in Education in 1966.  After teaching for 30 years at Rockridge, she retired in 1993.  Her retirement was short lived as she went to work in the box office at the brand new Mark of the Quad Cities, where she enjoyed working with friends and customers for another 12 years.

She never had children of her own, but every student was like a member of her family and their future success was important to her.  For many of her students a recommendation from Ms. Lawson opened the door for career opportunities in the Quad City area.  She also dearly loved the children of the Migrant School that she ran in the Reynolds area for 7 years.

Ramona was a member of the Illinois Education Association and a lifetime member of the National Education Association.  She loved gathering with family members for a game of cards or dominoes, enjoyed talking to the friends she met at weekly bingo games, and was very happy with a fishing pole in her hands.

She is survived by her twin brother, Richard (Jane) Lawson of Viola, brother, William (Elaine) Lawson of Rock Island and sister, Jacqueline (Kenneth) Brown of Viola, as well as over a hundred nieces and nephews, all of which she was very proud of and loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as sisters, Florine Carlson, Disie Weihler, Mary Harding, Ella Spengler and Nancy Dowsett and their husbands.
