Lester W. McCaw, 77, of Viola, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Aledo Rehab & Health Center. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Burial is at Viola Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Viola American Legion Post 229. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial fund will be established. He was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Aledo, the son of Leo and Miriam Mawby McCaw. He married Phyllis Rosalie Franks Dec. 28, 1951, in Aledo. Mr. McCaw was a machinist at Farmall in Rock Island for 23 years, retiring in 1985. Corporal McCaw served in the Army National Guard from 1949-1952. He also served in the Civil Air Patrol from 1989-1995, making the rank of captain. He enjoyed travelling, aviation, camping and auto racing. Les could usually be found tinkering in the garage. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Viola American Legion and the Mercer County Aerial Club. He was also active with Crime Stoppers. Survivors include his wife, Rosie McCaw, Viola; daughters (and spouse), Dixie Carter, Viola, and Marcia (Kevin) Mickley, New Windsor; son (and spouse), Lance (Tina) McCaw, Aledo; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and one on the way; and brother, Larry McCaw, Chillicothe, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
