John W. Basala, 76, of Matherville, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Matherville. Burial is at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Viola. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola, with rosary recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Mercer County Nursing Home or St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was born April 29, 1933, in Matherville, son of George Jr. and Luella Raisbeck Basala. He attended Matherville Grade School. John enjoyed playing cards, collecting pencils and working jigsaw puzzles. You could find John around town, mowing yards or visiting with people. He was a member of of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Matherville. Survivors (and their spouses) include his mother, Luella Basala, Mercer County Nursing Home, Aledo; sister, Lois (Deane) Frye, Aledo; brothers, Robert (Billee) Basala, Aledo, David (Beverly) Basala, Matherville, James (Darlene) Basala, Mesa, Ariz., and Dennis (Reeda) Basala, Matherville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; and brothers, Donald Basala and Marlyn Basala.
