Joe “Jake” Gluba, 97, of Keithsburg, Illinois died Monday, June 12, 2017 at Colonial Manor of Amana, Iowa. Visitation is Saturday, June 17th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., at First Christian Church, Keithsburg, Illinois. Burial, with military honors, will be in Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg. Memorials may be left for Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo is caring for arrangements.
Joseph Harry was born September 8, 1919 in Keithsburg, Illinois a son of Joseph and Emma Pauline Gray Gluba. Joe “Jake” married Caroline Sedam, of New Boston, Illinois, on January 26, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. The couple enjoyed spending time with each other… from “just sitting around” and laughing to cooking and canning. They were happily married for 75 years. From 1942 – 1946, he served with the United States Army during World War II. He was proud to be chosen to be on the October 9, 2009 Honor Flight. For 25 years, he worked as a truck driver and salesman for Swift & Co., before moving on to work as a Security Guard at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. Upon retiring from there, the couple moved back to Keithsburg. Joe “Jake” liked playing cards, fishing and being part of the Old Fisherman’s Liars Club. He was a member of the Masons and Keithsburg Boat Club.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife: Caroline Gluba; children: Joseph Harry (Julie Slaman) Gluba, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, IA and Sherry Lee (Douglas) Schroeder of Swisher, IA; 8 grandchildren: “special granddaughter” Caryn DeSpain, Ricque Stubenrauch, twins- Joseph and Gabriel Gluba, Benjamin McCauley, Matthew McCauley, Amanda Robidoux and Allyson Schroeder; 19 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Carol June Powers, infant grandson, 3 sisters and 8 brothers.
