Helen Louise Chapman, 88, of Viola went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 23, 2009at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Viola United Presbyterian Church. Burial is in Viola Cemetery. Visitation is 4-7 p.m.Friday, June 26, 2009 at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be made to Viola United Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. She was born Aug. 7, 1920 in Delmont, S.D., the daughter of Albert and Bernice Baxter McConnell. She came to Illinois at the age of three months and was educated in the rural and Viola schools. She married Cornelius V. "Neil" Chapman April 19, 1947 at Viola Presbyterian Church. He preceded her Oct. 12, 1978. Helen had worked at Erickson Grocery Store and Quinns Grocery Store, retiring in 1984. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts. Mrs. Chapman also did some volunteer work at the nursing home. She was a charter member of Viola American Legion Auxiliary No. 299 and member of the East Moline Eagles Lodge. Survivors are sons and daughters-in-law, Hallace and Barbara Chapman and Dennis and Sally Chapman, all of Viola; four grandchildren, Angela, Bonnie, Neil and Brenda; three great- grandchildren, Anna, Kaitlyn and Andrew; two brothers and sisters-in-law, E. George and Sally McConnell, Hughesville, Mo., and John and Lois McConnell, Mt. Upton, N.Y. ; and many nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends, Shirley and Bobbie. She was preceded in death by parents, husband and brother, James Delferd McConnell on Oct. 26, 2006.
