Hazel Sheckles, 93, formerly of Keithsburg and Seaton, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, in Jefferson City, Mo.
Funeral services are 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m., at Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo. The services will be followed by cremation. A private burial at Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be left for Hospice Advantage of Columbia, Mo.
Hazel Neoma Ortery was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Biggsville, Ill., a daughter of George and Gladys Ishmael Ortery. On July 4, 1935, she married Ralph Sheckles in Keithsburg. He preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1988.
Hazel lived most of her life in Keithsburg until they moved to Iowa in 1978. She was a homemaker, with most of her time being spent raising her children and tending to the home. She did enjoy fishing and reading. Mrs. Sheckles was a Jehovah's Witness.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Arley (Lynne) Sheckles, DeWitt, Leona Springer, Seaton, Connie (Marlow) Watt, Fairfield Bay, Ark., and Alice (Paul) Schlup, Jefferson City, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Finch, Keithsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Ralph Jr.; daughter, Karen Hanson; grandson, Eric Hanson Jr.; brothers, Earl, Leonard and Fred Ortery; and sisters, Edith Turnquist and Betty Johanson.
