Florence Irene Howie, 88 of Viola, Illinois on Monday, May 25, 2009 went home to be with her Lord. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, May 29 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Memorials may be left for Viola United Methodist Church or Greene Township Fire District. She was born June 13, 1920 in Augusta, Illinois to Raymond and F. Elmira (Williams) Huff. She married Robert Howie on June 23, 1938. He preceded her in death in March of 1964. Florence was a member of Viola United Methodist Church where she served 40 years as bookkeeper and various other positions. She was also a member of Viola American Legion Auxiliary and The Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. Mrs. Howie was also a member of the board of directors for Viola Home Telephone Company for 26 years and retired in 2003 after being secretary for 24 years. Florence worked at Winola High School for 23 years as a secretary and bookkeeper. She was a member of the board of directors for Mercer County Cancer Society for 8 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling and gardening. She lived in the Viola area most of her life and moved to Heritage Woods in Aledo in 2006. Florence is survived by her three sons and their wives: Raymond and Lucy Howie, Rock Island, Larry and Gerry Howie, Viola and Jim and Valerie Howie, Moses Lake, Washington; 6 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Warren (died in WWII) and Harold (A Chief in US Navy) and her daughter, Judith.
