Duane Zwicker

Duane Zwicker, 92, of rural Sherrard, Illinois died Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Avonlea Cottage Memory Care, Milan.

Visitation is Sunday, June 5th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola.  Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 6th at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the German Cemetery, Richland Grove Township.  Memorials may be left for Preemption United Methodist Church.

Duane was born May 3, 1930 at the family farm near Sherrard, to Frederick and Frances Schurr Zwicker.  He graduated from Sherrard High School in 1948.  On August 4, 1962, he married Shirley Heaton at the Preemption United Methodist Church.  Duane served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in France.  Upon returning from his service, he farmed until 1980.  After retiring from farming, Duane worked for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture as a Plant & Pesticide Specialist until he retired in 2000.  Duane was active in the Sherrard Lions Club.  He was Precinct Committeeman for Richland Grove Township for many years.  In his younger years, he loved driving his various sports cars and traveling with his wife to Arizona.  He was a die-hard Dale Earnhardt fan and loved NASCAR and dirt-track racing.  Duane enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.  His love language was acts of service and in that aspect, his family was well-loved.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley; their daughter, Juliane and son-in-law, Steven Hood of Sherrard; grandchildren, Aurora (Jeff) Kay of Tregaian, Wales, and Jared Hood of Sherrard; and nephew Howard Johnston of Preemption.

Preceding him in death are his parents, and his sister Dolores Johnston.
