Dolan Diehl, Sr.

Dolan A. Diehl Sr., 89, of Keithsburg, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Aledo Rehab & Health Care Center. Services are 11 a.m. Monday, May 4, at New Boston United Methodist Church. Burial is at New Boston Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Mercer County VFW Post 1571. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the church with Masonic services at 6:30 p.m. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Aledo Rehab & Health Care Center. He was born Dec. 16, 1919, in New Boston, to Milo Alfred and Nellie Marie Mathews Diehl. He married Esther Butt Dec. 27, 1940, in Norfolk, Va. Dolan worked for the Corps of Engineers for 13 years as a lead welder, retiring in 1965. He then farmed in the Keithsburg area until 2000. Dolan was a member of the Iron Workers & Millwright Union and the Carpenters & Jointers Union Local No. 2158. Dolan served in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945 in the Phillipines and South Pacific. Dolan was an avid collector and enjoyed going to auctions. Dolan was a 56-year member of the Masons, belonging to both the New Boston and Keithsburg lodges. He had served as Master three times over the years. He was a 53-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. His other memberships included Mercer County VFW and New Boston United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Esther Diehl, Keithsburg; daughter (and spouse), Ginger (Harlan) Pruess, Lowden, Iowa; two sons (and spouse), Dolan Diehl Jr., Ackworth, Ga., and Jimmy (Cindy) Diehl, Keithsburg; seven grandchildren, Allen (Laura) Jackson, Brenda (Steve) Moseley, Misty (Delane) Holmes, Mike (Jolene) Diehl, Bobby (Erin) Diehl, Travis (Angel) Diehl and Stephanie (Mike) Retherford; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren, Michele (Jay) Proesch and Todd (Debbie) Pruess; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Joanna Henderson, Aledo; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clarence "Sonny" Diehl; four sisters, Ella Whitehall, Rosella Coulter, Phyllis Welin and Harriet Coulter; and one great-granddaughter.
