Bernard "Bernie" Engels

Bernard J. "Bernie" Engels, 84, of Viola, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Trinity West, Rock Island. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola. Burial will be at Viola Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Aledo American Legion Fallerans Post 121. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 11, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. He was born July 26, 1923, in Rock Island, the son of Leonard and Camilla Caufield Engels. He married Joyce A. Skailand on Sept. 28, 1946, in Rock Island. Bernie worked 30 years as a heating and cooling pipefitter for the Brooke Company, Davenport. Machinist Mate 1st Class Engels served in the Navy during World War II. He enjoyed camping and doing handy-work. Mr. Engels was a member of the Viola Lions Club, Aledo American Legion, Fort Armstrong Camping Club, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 25 and First Baptist Church, Joy. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Engels, Viola; two sons, Daniel and Linda Engels, and Kenneth Engels, all of Viola; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Carol, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Cory.
